Tarun Mehta
About Us
Tarun Mehta's entrepreneurial journey began in the labs of IIT Madras, where he and his batchmate Swapnil Jain spent countless hours perfecting a Stirling engine project. What started as a college experiment in external combustion engines would eventually evolve into one of India's most innovative electric vehicle companies.
Tarun's approach to problem-solving is characterized by what he calls "going very deep." Whether it was spending six months on a remote BHEL internship to focus on their Stirling engine project, or later diving deep into understanding battery pack architectures for electric vehicles, Tarun believes in thoroughly understanding every aspect before moving forward. This methodical approach, while sometimes slowing initial progress, has resulted in building products with substantial competitive advantages.
Founded in 2013 with Swapnil Jain, Ather Energy is now India's fourth-largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer, producing smart electric scooters and building the Ather Grid charging network across India. A strong believer in the superiority of the electric drive, Tarun started working on EV battery packs to solve one of the biggest pain points with EVs in India.
Tarun's philosophy extends beyond just building products – he believes in building organizations that can sustain and grow exponentially. His experience taught him that patience and getting "all details right" in engineering projects is crucial. Even when their early Stirling engine prototypes didn't work initially, the process taught valuable lessons about persistence and the importance of precision in engineering.
Hailing from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Tarun grew up in Ahmedabad and graduated from IIT Madras in 2012 with a degree in Engineering Design. His college years were marked by extensive involvement in product development, creating over a dozen prototypes and gaining hands-on experience that would prove invaluable in his entrepreneurial journey.
Today, Tarun continues to lead Ather Energy's mission to revolutionize India's mobility landscape. His vision extends beyond just manufacturing electric vehicles – he's building an ecosystem that includes charging infrastructure, smart connectivity, and sustainable transportation solutions for India's growing urban population.Tarun Mehta represents the new generation of Indian entrepreneurs who combine deep technical expertise with global vision, proving that with patience, persistence, and the right approach to problem-solving, it's possible to build world-class products from India.
